The BTH Emission Inventory

The Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei (BTH) emission inventory is an anthropogenic emission inventory for the BTH region for 2017. It is developed by the MEIC team of Tsinghua University and supported by National Natural Science Foundation of China and National Research Program for Key Issues in Air Pollution Control. The emission inventory has constructed a complete mapping from the Environmental Statistics (ES) database and National Census on Pollution Sources (NCPS) to emission calculation parameters, combined with macro-statistic data for total constraint and missing gaps. Based on these data, a comprehensive point source database that contains about 8659 industrial factories is compiled, covering key sectors such as power, iron and steel, cement, coking, flat glass and non-ferrous metals. The point source database is coupled with the line sources and area sources in MEIC model to establish a complete high-resolution (0.1°×0.1°) database for the BTH region. Through the establishment of a point source database, the emission inventory effectively improves the accuracy for key sectors and reduces the errors caused by the use of spatial proxies in the traditional methods. The BTH emission inventory will support the city-level emission estimates, refined air quality management, and health risk assessment in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region.

Ten chemical species are included in the BTH emission inventory, including both gaseous species and aerosol species: SO2, NOx, CO, NMVOC, NH3, PM10, PM2.5, BC, OC and CO2. NMVOC emissions are speciated into model-ready inputs for two chemical mechanisms: CB05 and SAPRC-99. Emissions are aggregated into five sectors: power, industry, residential, transportation, and agriculture. The annual gridded data at 0.1° spatial resolution enables multiscale modeling of air quality by chemical transport models.
